As our nation is finally on the other side of the presidential election, we are reminded as believers, to keep our focus on Christ. This election cycle has been divisive, cruel, and ugly. As I was reflecting on these past few years and reading the story of Daniel in the Bible, I was reminded of some wonderful truths to share.
Daniel found himself in a time of turbulence and tribulation. He was chosen by the King to be brought with some of his friends to live and to be conformed to the customs of the King. Daniel however knew that he would not put his faith and devotion against the One and only God! He stood strong to not compromise his beliefs by going to the King and asking to be allowed to not eat the food being required of him. Instead, he offered a solution the King accepted.
Another big lesson we learn from Daniel is how he responded to a crisis situation. The leaders conspired against Daniel and entrapped the King into making a decision that would cause Daniel to be killed. He was told that if he prayed to his God (our God), he would be put into the lion’s den. Daniel didn’t fret and instead, he went back to his room and openly prayed to God as he was accustomed in doing. Daniel put God over his fear and trusted his life with Him.
Those who have read the story of Daniel know that God provided him with protection as he faced the lions. He came out of the situation unscathed and I can imagine, with a much deeper trust in God. He praises God and the result was the King mandated that everyone in the Kingdom were to follow the God of Daniel! How wonderful is that?
So the lesson of Daniel teaches us to be rooted in our faith, booted for the current situation, and, to stay suited up for the oncoming challenges in our lives. When we stay rooted, booted, and suited in Christ, we too can face the lions that threaten to destroy us. And, there are some specific steps we can do to stay rooted, booted, and suited.
STAYING ROOTED IN CHRIST – We all know the storms in life will come. Just like plants that have grown a deep and strong root system, we too can develop a spiritual root system to sustain us when times are difficult. Remaining in God’s Word, developing a deep, prayer life, and, connecting with other believers are ways to develop your spiritual root system. The deeper our root system becomes, the stronger we will be when we face the next crisis in our lives. How are you remaining rooted in Christ?
BOOTED WITH CHRIST – Christ instructs us in His Word to remain in Him. John 15:9 tells us to “abide in His love“. When we put Christ first, we become His boots on the ground. He requires us to be His army while we are on this earth. “A good soldier of Jesus Christ.” 2 Timothy 2:2,3. Every day, we need to wake up and put on our boots for the Kingdom. We are to be ready to do His work, take the Word to others, and walk in faith. Are your boots shined up and ready for service to Christ?
SUITED FOR CHRIST – We’ve been taught about putting on the armor of God. Specifically, Ephesians 6:11, “ Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.” We are told to “put on” this armor. This means we have to intentionally be in preparation for battle. The enemy desires to destroy us on a daily basis. When we prepare to fight the enemy, we have to do a little work ahead of time. Your armor needs to be in good, working condition. This means a consistent oiling and maintenance program. Are you ready, willing, and able to be suited up for Christ?
Friends, we have work to do for the Kingdom. I am thankful the Bible reminds us of people like Daniel who stayed rooted, booted, and suited for His true King. What a beautiful reminder for each of us as we face our daily challenges. Keep your eyes on Christ and allow Him to slay the lions that may come your way.
