Recently, I was teaching my Bible study group and we were discussing the Armor of God in Ephesians 6. As we went through the different parts of the full armor, we covered the four items we wear, the helmet of salvation, the breastplate of righteousness, the belt of truth, and your feet fitted for readiness. The two-pieces of warrior equipment that we carry is the shield of faith in one hand and the sword of the Spirit in the other hand. One used to defend and the other to advance in boldness.
As we discussed each specific part of the Armor of God, I had one of my class members ask me, “Paula, why do you think there is nothing mentioned that covers our backs?” What a great question and one that I went home and pondered. That evening, I heard the Holy Spirit say, “Paula, God has your back!” And yes! How perfect! Indeed, God has our backs in this battle we each go into on a daily basis.
This beautiful message has given me a lot to think about this past week. I’ve always known that God has my back but had never really thought about this when studying the Armor of God. As we daily don our spiritual armor, we must always know without a doubt that our Almighty God has our back. No matter how daunting the road we are traveling appears, understanding the truth of God’s hand on our back should provide each of us with a profound sense of security and comfort.
Each day as you dress in your Armor, picture the hand of God squarely on your back. His mighty hand is there to protect and to guide you through any and all of your trials. What a beautiful picture as we call upon His mighty Name to go before us. As He indeed goes before us, His gentle, yet strong hand rests on our back with guidance and security.
